I just wanted to add one small correction to the entry for 2001: Rosen's donation of looted cuneiform tablets was accepted by Cornell University's Department of Near Eastern Studies--not the museum, which is the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.

While it may seem a minor point of clarification, the episode highlights the role some academics have played in promoting unprovenanced antiquities, and shows that the already-limited ethical standards for museums may not be recognized within the same institution.

In this case, a Near Eastern Studies professor (David Owen) apparently accepted the donation (and accompanying financial sums for research support, etc.,) without involving the Johnson Museum, and published them despite objections from university peers. Unfortunately, this damaged Cornell's reputation more generally.Betsy Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11801168265322203131noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3425507272157287074.post-38215350770015471972023-09-19T03:20:16.771+02:002023-09-19T03:20:16.771+02:00What I believed to be an investment I made 19 year...What I believed to be an investment I made 19 years ago turns out to be worthless. Because I could never afford them, I ended up with little knicknacks I bought with lawnmowing money at Pier 1, like a little jade elephant, a brass three wise monkeys paperweight. As I got older though, I did wonder about the ethics of Sadigh selling pieces of other countries' cultural heritage to wealthy Americans. And then I started to be suspicious of how Sadigh could actually have so many "authentic" antiquities to sell. Once I started being able to travel internationally, I picked up souvenirs that were either modern made local handicrafts, or reproductions of artifacts from places I visited: makonde tree of life carving from Zanzibar, "antiqued" green bronze Roman warrior statuette from the gift shop at Pompeii, etc. A couple of things, like the hand illustrated page of a book I bought in Istanbul, did purport to be older, but if I found out today it was a fake, it wouldn't be any less valuable to me. I never tried to pass off the items as "authentic" to visitors to my house; I just liked that they reminded me of the places I had been and looked good in my house, and if they made me more "interesting" in any way, it was simply that I had actually had the experience of traveling to the places they came from, had stories to tell. Sadigh is a criminal, and he deserved a harsher sentence than he got, but I have trouble mustering much sympathy for his victims. These were adults with thousands of dollars to spend, why didn't they have the same questions about the ethics of owning these items if they were authentic, and question whether they really were authentic, like I had as a preteen? Because the idea of owning these items fed their vanity. Instead of going out and becoming interesting by having interesting experiences, and cherishing souvenirs of those experiences regardless of their provenance, these people thought they could buy sophistication by owning expensive things with a long history (that had nothing to do with them). They felt so violated when they found the items were forgeries because the reflected glory of owning the object was the only thing of value to them, because they took a shortcut. Their own shallowness was the real thing that did them in. This reminds me of the meaning behind the old saying "you can't cheat an honest man." Had they been honest with themselves, thoughtful about why they wanted to buy these things, they never would have been victims of Sadigh's fraud.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3425507272157287074.post-21405564849041123662023-04-01T14:27:19.801+02:002023-04-01T14:27:19.801+02:00This is the updated, correct link:
